DataOps (Azure) Engineering Manager (Hybrid) - Direct Hire | Open

ROLE

We are seeking a skilled DataOps Engineering Manager to lead and manage a team of 5-10 Data Engineering, SRE Engineering and DataOps professionals. The ideal candidate will be responsible for the reliability, availability, and performance of data platforms: traditional, cloud-based, or data lakes in Azure.

Your responsibilities in this role will include:

  • Team Leadership: You will be responsible for building and managing a high-performing team of SREs & DataOps professionals. This includes hiring, training, mentoring, and guiding team members.
  • Strategy and Planning: You will work closely with cross-functional teams to develop and implement strategies for improving system reliability, scalability, and performance. This may involve capacity planning, incident management, and disaster recovery planning.
  • Data Operations Management: You will oversee the day-to-day operations of data pipelines, ensuring data is collected, processed, and stored accurately and efficiently. This includes monitoring data quality, troubleshooting issues, and optimizing data workflows.
  • Data Integration: You will work closely with cross-functional teams, such as data engineers, data scientists, and business analysts, to ensure seamless integration of data from various sources into the organization’s data infrastructure. This may involve designing and implementing data integration processes and tools.
  • System Reliability: You will oversee the monitoring, alerting, and incident response processes to ensure timely identification and resolution of system issues. You will also drive the implementation of automation and self-healing mechanisms to minimize manual intervention.
  • Collaboration: You will collaborate with development teams, infrastructure teams, and other stakeholders to ensure that reliability and performance requirements are considered throughout the software development lifecycle. This includes participating in design reviews, providing feedback on architecture, and promoting best practices.
  • Continuous Improvement: You will drive a culture of continuous improvement by identifying areas for optimization, implementing process enhancements, and leveraging new technologies and tools to enhance system reliability and data management processes.
  • Documentation, Communication, and Knowledge Sharing: You will ensure that data operations processis, run books, and incident postmortems are created and maintained to facilitate knowledge sharing, learning from past incidents, and providing guidance on data-related matters.

 

KEY CLIENT NOTES

  • Salary range – 160-175k + bonus
  • Hybrid work schedule – Tuesday-Thursday in Midtown Atlanta
  • US Citizens and Green Card holders strongly preferred
  • MUST HAVE strong DevOps/Cloud skills relating to data platforms vs. data applications
  • This hands-on Manager will use their DevOps/Cloud skills in a data environment – data engineering/data pipeline knowledge/experience is a MUST HAVE
  • Azure data lake experience is strongly preferred, but if a candidate has DEEP knowledge of AWS and is open to working in an Azure environment then they will also be considered
  • Previous core cloud technology experience – Unix, Linux, Shell Scripting, Python, SQL, Rest APIs, etc
  • This Manager will lead and build this team – The current team is 5-6 people and will grow to around 10 within the year

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • BA/BS in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience
  • At least 5+ years’ experience as a database platform engineer devising medium to large-scale solutions, including experience with tasks such as data migration, data modeling, automation, modernization, data replication, backup and recovery, and general DBA tasks
  • Experience migrating from traditional on-prem OLTP/OLAP databases to cloud native DBaaS and/or NoSQL databases like Cassandra, Neo4J, MongoDB etc.
  • Deep expertise operating in a cloud environment, and with cloud native databases like Cosmos DB, Couchbase etc
  • Proficiency in various data modeling techniques, such as ER, Hierarchical, Relational, or NoSQL modeling
  • Excellent design, development, and tuning experience with SQL (OLTP and OLAP) and NoSQL databases
  • Experience with modern database DevOps tools like Liquibase, Redgate Flyway, or DBmaestro.
  • Deep understanding of data security and compliance, and related architecture
  • Deep understanding and strong administrative experience with distributed data processing frameworks such as Hadoop, Spark, and others
  • Experience with programming languages like Python, Java, Scala, and machine learning libraries
  • Experience with dev ops tools like Git, Maven, Jenkins, GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps
  • Experience with Agile development concepts and related tools
  • Ability to tune and troubleshoot performance issues across the codebase and database queries
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to think critically and creatively to develop innovative data solutions
  • Excellent written and strong communication skills, with the ability to effectively convey complex technical concepts to a diverse audience
  • Passion for learning with a proactive mindset, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Preferred – experience applying machine learning and AI techniques in operationalizing data platforms
